CONCEPT

          THE NARRATIVE AND MEANING

From the start, Lucifer will be running from the suffering that drives him ultimately to suicide - the cause is unknown and is left entirely up to interpretation. Mikael runs with determination and fear as he tries to save Lucifer and these shots all interweave with each other, creating a nebulous narrative that captivates the audience as they attempt to understand what happens.

The shots of anger and frustration show Lucifer's emotions and struggle before he decides to commit suicide and Mikael's shots of emotions are of the 'future' which becomes the present as he learns and understands Lucifer's death where he is frustrated at himself for being that little bit too late and not being there for him but also at Lucifer for committing suicide.

All the scenes pre-instrumental are the build up where there is mainly running and frustration shots. During the instrumental is when the audience can become aware of the suggested suicide where Mikael runs up the stairs (the same stairs that Lucifer runs up at the start of the video) and Lucifer closes his yes and releases his clenched hand (which is previously clenched tightly) - representing his release of emotions and relaxed state as he supposedly 'gives in' to death.

Mikael reaches there just in time for Lucifer to turn back and apologise (in Korean) and Mikael is left to watch his friend die. This is all only suggested through the fast cuts of Mikael being angry/sad and the empty fence area on the rooftop where Lucifer previously stood.

It then rushes into a series of flashbacks of the two in black and white - representing the loss (of happiness in the past) and the running and anger and hopelessness all combined into one - a state of confusion, reflecting on the character - Mikael's - emotions as the audience follow him through the story, after witnessing his friend's death. It finishes with Mikael alone, mirroring the actions of Lucifer earlier (falling against the wall) and what happens to him is left to audience's interpretation.

The reason for Lucifer's suicide is also up to interpretation. It can be possible that the two characters have a forbidden homosexual relationship - questioning society's views on such topics and an attempt to push boundaries. Or they could just simply be really good friends - the fact that a reason is not included allows freedom for the audience to imagine and create.

The meaning behind it is to discourage people from suicide. Suicide not only affects themselves but the people around them. The lyrics of 'Nokturn Sonata' speak of how after the friend dies, Mikael can do nothing but stay on the earth and let Lucifer go. It is also the idea of cherishing one another and to emphasise the positive aspects in life, the happiness that once lost cannot be redeemed. So it is an interpretative message also, but with a sole aim of encouraging people to think again before committing suicide.
