LIGHTING

The rain location is a backyard area, with clean white walls, fitted with some rather dirty, old-looking windows with a brick-like structure.

Considering that the effect I want to achieve is one of abandonment and derelict, the location ideally has to be dark. The issue with this location is that the place looks too clean and the white walls will reflect a lot of light, even in monochrome settings.

I took some research into ways of dressing the set up and lighting techniques. Considering that the shoot will take place during the evening in the dark, the general lighting will be dark, but I will be needed lights to illuminate the ‘rain drops’ and to illuminate the artists’ faces. This could cause the background to be lit up as it reflects the key light.

The inverse square law:

- Any physical law stating: a specified quantity/intensity is inversely proportional to the square of distance from the source
- If the light is twice the distance from the background as it is from the subject, the background receives 4x less light
- Three times further away = 9x less light

This method could theoretically make a white wall appear darker/black if there is enough space to work with. I will have to experiment with the location and lighting positions before the actual shoot so the actual filming day will be undertaken in an organised efficient manner.

There are also possible ways to make the day appear as night time through the means of post-production. By playing with the brightness and contrast and channel mixer, it can create an illusion of a night time setting. This is something I will experiment with.
