We live in an age where we are surrounded by media technologies and with its commercialisation it has opened doors to many of us to make DIY productions and my portfolio has made me use a range of technologies that has allowed me to realise a project.

Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The World Wide Web has opened us to new vistas to information which has facilitated research on the unsigned artist. For starters, without the internet, chances are that K-pop would not have spread so far so wide and ultimately not have led to my decision of using a Korean song.

With the endless possibilities and potential that the internet provides, people can easily upload, share and spread content and in recent years, this has led to a boom in ‘viral videos’ such as ‘Charlie Bit My Finger’ and ‘Gangnam Style’.

Using YouTube, people can easily create their own musical content using a range of composing/editing software and programmes and even apps and they can share them with the world by uploading it onto the internet – most commonly YouTube – an example of what David Gauntlet describes as Web 2.0. With YouTube being the largest video sharing site, I used it as my main source to find an unsigned, original Korean song.

One issue I did encounter researching Korean unsigned tracks was the fact that I did not find as many tracks compared to English songs.

Eventually, I decided to create a video for ‘Nokturn Sonata’. I then had to contact the artist for permission to use their song. Using email services, I managed to easily message and receive permission via mass video sharing website YouTube and seek permission, require filming requirements and details with location management. Email has proved to be very efficient in matters of planning and organising.
