KOREAN MUSIC INDUSTRY
Artists in general change their images every few years or occasionally shorter periods of time, so they can increase their commercial value. They need to reinvent themselves and experiment with different styles to provide fans with new, exciting content.
SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong played the character of Yoon Ji Hoo in the hit Korean drama ‘Boys Before Flowers’ and he obtained and preserved his pretty boy, prince-like image for the following year or two. 2011 saw a drastic image change to a cool, edgier, bad boy styled Hyun Joong, with short, styled hair in comparison to the long, soft, elegant image previously. Clothing that reveals his toned body more also contributed to the sexy look and this secured his fan base and also increased it as this new image appealed to other audiences also.

Artists have to keep changing their images otherwise their music career probably wouldn’t last long as fans lose interest due to seeing repetitive material. All celebrities have to change their styles now and then, as do normal people change their wardrobe, hairstyles or makeup now and then to create different looks. This is a vital process in increasing fans and promoting the artist to show versatility and diversity, but most importantly to keep or increase their market value.
