TECHNICAL CONVENTIONS
Editing
o Jump cuts are the most commonly used editing technique in music videos – allows sudden change of scene
o Fades and dissolves are used as transitions to create different effects such as sadness and romance
o Slow Motion/change in velocity – often used to create various different effects
o The editing often mirrors the tempo and mood of the song
Jessie J – ‘Nobody’s Perfect’
- Jump cuts are used here to switch between the many different settings which contrast with the previous. This engages the audience, keeping them interested. The cuts are used in relation to the song, with the scenes changing between chorus and verse and more
Fun – ‘We Are Young’
- Slow motion is used throughout the video and this creates breath-taking effects with things blowing up and breaking. Slow motion can be used to create beautiful effects on screen and this video is a good example of it. The human eye cannot get in detail such fast things in great detail which is why this video is so amusing and interesting.
