HISTORY

o Increased popularity in Rock ‘n’ Roll (Rockabilly) – artists such as Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins
- Doo wop – a form of rock and roll during the 1950s that was the most popular
• Emphasis on lyrics that did not make sense and multi part vocal harmonies accompanied with light instrumentation
• Most doo wop acts were short-lived, one hit wonders
• There were a few exceptions however such as
The Platters and The Coasters with their songs ‘The Great Pretender’ and ‘Yakety Yak’ ranked as the era’s most successful rock and roll acts 
• Doo wop acts became major influences on the musical world including artists such as ‘The Beatles’
• Made a cultural impact – change in fashion, attitude and language
• This genre and their lyrics as they targeted taboo issues of the time pushed boundaries and expressed inner emotions
