STYLES

The humorous performance style is selling right now, with those videos gaining millions of hits on YouTube. Performance will probably always be a popular option as fans can watch as their idols sing directly to them on screen, whilst they observe their talent in dancing and singing. Narrative combined with performance is also a common form now as it also shows their talent in acting as well as just dance and singing – as seen here in Teen Top’s ‘Crazy’ video where a love story compliments the song. Love narratives are common amongst younger artists as it appeals to their fans who admire them.

The most popular form of music video currently would probably be narrative combined with performance based. 'Gangnam Style' has become one of the most popular music videos but why? Aside from the catchy tune and hook, it was the humorous ‘horse dance’ and comedic music video that made it such a hit globally.

The Korean styled song with major Western influences in style proved to be successful and HyunA’s ‘Ice Cream’ mv which features PSY also takes on a comedic nature.

Rock artists occasionally have narratives concerning death and suicide as seen in the powerful ‘Don’t Jump’ by Tokio Hotel. Narratives help to make music videos more interesting as performance shots can become rather repetitive. Story lines help to engage audiences and keep them intrigued, as an increasing number of artists are producing series of music videos of song in their albums with a narrative that links them all together such as in T-ara’s videos and Katy Perry’s.
