Using Korean male idol images as inspiration, make up was a requirement along with the use of dark eyeliner. Most male Korean celebrities that sell the ‘cool’ image rather than the ‘cute’ will often sport bold, dark eye make-up to build a character of strength and power as it intensifies the gaze and adds emphasis on the eyes through the close up shots when they look directly at the camera – appearing to look directly at the audience.

These shots are used during the performance scenes to engage the audience and captivate them as a connection is built and this is effective amongst loyal fans – especially with female fans as it creates the illusion of direct address.

The use of close ups was another convention, not only in the K-pop or Pop genre, but generally, in all music videos as the aim is to sell the artist and in order to do so, they must make audiences familiar with their appearance. 2PM’s ‘Without You’ music video was a major inspiration and influence when planning my video and similar to that video, I used a range of camera angles.

Aside from the standard close up shots used in most music videos, I experimented with high and low angles to create effects to reflect emotions of the characters such as the high angle shot as Lucifer (Han Kim) walks up the stairs. The high angle emphasises on his weak and vulnerable position as he feels hopeless and depressed.
